Mark Mebus started 20th Street Pizza because he wanted to outdo himself. He had already been running the wildly popular vegan pizza and sandwich shop Blackbird in Philadelphia for several years, and he did what anyone who is truly dedicated to their craft does — they get better at it. 20th Street Pizza (in my humble opinion) is not only the best vegan pizza in Philadelphia, it is the best pizza in Philadelphia. Period. When he asked me to design a logo for him he had only a few requests. One was not to use red. The other was to evoke the timeless simplicity of America’s longest running slice shops. Prioritizing hyper-legibility, and a sense of familiarity over all else.
